Baz Luhrmann, director of such epic love stories as Moulin Rouge and Australia (am I the only one that loved that movie?!), recently said he hopes his new update of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby will spur a summer of extravagant parties inspired by the film. I, for one, am with him on that! There’s just something intriguing about the wild excess of the Roaring 20s, though keep in mind flappers didn’t have to worry about having unflattering photos posted on Facebook!
From the cocktails and food to the décor and the clothes, it’s a perfect theme for a party and we have some great ideas to help you pull off the perfect summer soiree. Because as Luhrmann said, “It’s going to be the summer of Gatsby.”
While the champagne flowed freely at Gatsby’s parties, in many a speakeasy in the 20s the cocktails were made with sweet ingredients and juices to hide the harsh taste of “bathtub” gin. Here are links to recipes for some of the most popular drinks of the day that will definitely get the party going even now:
To soak up all of the alcohol, offer a buffet of finger foods like crab stuffed mushrooms, deviled eggs, fresh fruit, and caviar or pâté with crackers. Serve everything on a mix of ornate silver and cut crystal serving pieces to create an opulent display for both canapés and cocktails.
Because Jay Gatsby believed in making a stylish statement at his parties, keep the little details in mind. Consider using monogrammed servingware to really make your mark, customize ice cubes with lemon or lime peels or mint leaves frozen inside, and fill tables with lush florals mixed with feathers and lots and lots of candlelight.
