A quick note: all of our playlists (past and future) will now be served with more Rdio! They’ll be embedded within the post for your listening pleasure; full tracks are available to Rdio subscribers, while 30 second snippets will play for those who aren’t (you should correct that, really). Rdio rules, and we’re not even getting paid to say it. Press play as you’re reading our playlist notes. The post is much better with a soundtrack.
Playlist: Summer Love
Ah, summer. The season for lazy days, BBQs, beach time, and thrilling romance. Summer love doesn’t have to be short-lived, either. Sometimes what starts in summer can last through all seasons. But let’s focus on the here and now, shall we? Here’s the Bridebird soundtrack for your summer love.
Maps | Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Did you forget about this song? It was on constant rotation about ten years ago, and I still like it. Angsty. A little bit heavy. Very catchy.
Absolute Beginners | Carla Bruni
This song is an excellent rendition of simple love. “As long as we’re together, the rest can go to hell.” What’s not to love? Originally a David Bowie song, but Bruni’s got that cute accent that is perfect for summer.
All Alright | Sigur Ros
A Sigur Ros song… in English! This is possibly more of an end of summer love song, but it’s beautiful and I wanted to include it anyway. It takes place in that moment beyond simple love. When things start to get a little complicated and someone messes up. When you reach a point to end it or continue. “Let’s sing into the years, like one. Singing in tune, together.”
Love Love Love | Susie Suh (not available in Rdio)
A sweet song about overcoming fear and opening your heart to love.
Reasons | Built to Spill
“How the hell do you do this. Change the colors shapes and size. I’m clueless.
Not one thing I recognize.” Love really can turn your world upside down (or right side up) just like that.
True Love Will Find You In The End | Daniel Johnston
A short and sweet track by a troubled but romantic soul.
All Is Full Of Love | Björk
Do I have to explain this one? Classic Björk. Love is in the air.
Give Me A Reason To Love You | Portishead
A different side of love here. Perhaps it could be called the desperate side, or even the tired side. But who hasn’t been there? Sometimes, you just want to love someone.
Crazy In Love | Antony and The Johnsons
Beyonce’s version was a big hit (of course), but for me her frenetic delivery of the lyrics didn’t convey the right sentiment. Antony’s version works for me, and I think I never really processed the lyrics before. Beautiful.
I Will Follow You Into The Dark | Death Cab For Cutie
This song is a tad somber, but if anyone can make death romantic it’s a person in love. Together forever!
The Luckiest | Ben Folds
I don’t think there’s a person on this planet who doesn’t want to hear words like these: “I love you more than I have ever found a way to say to you.” I want to hear them every summer. And fall and winter and spring.
