A quick note: all of our playlists (past and future) will now be served with more Rdio! They’ll be embedded within the post for your listening pleasure; full tracks are available to Rdio subscribers, while 30 second snippets will play for those who aren’t (you should correct that, really). Rdio rules, and we’re not even getting paid to say it. Press play as you’re reading our playlist notes. The post is much better with a soundtrack.
Why should the barbequing fun stop just because it’s July 5th? Here’s an indie summer playlist to get you through the grill days ahead:
Noonan | Marnie Stern
Idol | Smith Westerns
Dreamy summer pop! Yes!
Void | Sonny & The Sunsets
Retro beach rock but with fun and unpredictable elements. Rather quirky, and that’s a good thing!
Always on the Run | Bosnian Rainbows
What do you get when you cross The Mars Volta with Le Butcherettes? Supposedly Bosnian Rainbows, but this is really a new venture not heavily inspired by the members’ other work. There’s definitely more indie pop and not much prog or punk here, and the results even veer into fun.
Into the Sun | CSS
Electro indie pop from Brazil. CSS stands for Cansei de Ser Sexy, which literally translates as “I got tired of being sexy.” And the lead singer’s name is Lovefoxxx. Indeed.
Painful Like | Austra
This is the second time I’ve included Austra on a playlist this year. I can’t help it! I don’t expect to be listening to this all year, but this is great summer stuff.
Coastal Love | GRMLN
Upbeat Cali punk pop. It was hard to pick a track because the whole album is begging to be listened to this summer, so consider this a teaser!
Lemuria | Dream Eater
Indie punk rock. The whole album is solid, and I have a feeling I’ll be listening to this one well past summer. I like that they have both a male and female vocalist, but never descend into a song by “a couple” lamenting the demise of their relationship. In fact, there’s not much (any?) navel gazing here at all. Refreshing!
Floating Vibes | Surfer Blood
Relaxed, easy surf rock. Nothing revolutionary here, but nice summer tunes.
Diamond | Lightning Dust
Glimmering, cinematic synth pop. Perfect for your summer soundtrack.
Isjaki | Sigur Ros
Every Sigur Ros album pretty much sounds the same, but no one minds because we love everything they’ve got to give us. I think of Sigur Ros as one of those bands that’s impossible to dislike. Their songs are just so pretty and ethereal and possibly epic. That said, their new album is more… robust. Still distinctively them, but now with more oomph!
Anna says: Here at Bridebird, music is crucial to our very essence. What I would obsess over at my wedding? The playlist. (Seriously; a likeminded friend just assembled 8 hours of music to play at his recent wedding, with different playlists at the ready in case people were bored, or sleepy, or pumped drunk.) In that spirit, we are thrilled to offer weekly playlists, inspired by a particular theme or feeling or pop cultural moment, that you can purchase over at Amazon or your music purveyor of choice. Our only request? To please purchase the music legally; stealing, just like a crappy DJ, is poor form. And we know, we know; we left something out/included a dumb song/generally have strange musical taste. Tell us all about it in the comments!
